ABSTRACT:
Mucoadhesive microspheres interaction with the mucus layer covering the mucosal epithelial surface and increase the residence time of the spheres at the site of absorption or action. The present investigation is to formulate and evaluate mucoadhesive microspheres of Gliclazide by using Sodium CMC 200-300cps, Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose 50cps and Methyl Cellulose as mucoadhesive polymers. The Microspheres were prepared by the Emulsion Gelation method and the prepared microspheres were evaluated for flow properties, size analysis, wall thickness, drug content, SEM analysis, entrapment efficiency, mucoadhesive strength, In-vitro drug release and stability studies. The In-Vitro drug release was extended up to 12 hours and almost 42% and 27% of mucoadhesion was observed in 0.1N Hcl and pH 7.4 phosphate buffers respectively. The optimized formulation was found to be stable as per ICH guidelines.
