ABSTRACT:
Cinnamomum malabatrum (Burm F) Blume is a tropical young tree belonging to the family Lauraceae, which grows up to 15m in height. It is widely distributed in dense forests in Western Ghats, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in India. Almost all parts of the plant are traditionally used for the treatment of various diseases. Leaves and barks are mostly used in inflammation, anorexia, colic and skin diseases. The bark of Cinnamomum malabatrum (Burm F) Blume was collected, authenticated and dried. It was then extracted with alcohol using Soxhlation. The phytochemical screening of extract shows the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, phenols, proteins, tannins and terpenoids. The total phenolics and tannin content of the bark extract was determined by using spectroscopic methods. The antioxidant study was conducted by Nitric oxide scavenging method, Hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging method and DPPH method. The IC50 values of the extract of Cinnamomum malabatrum bark by Nitric oxide scavenging method, Hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging method and DPPH method was found to be 131.1μg/ml, 157.9μg/ml and 179.1μg/ml respectively.
