ABSTRACT:
India has one of the richest traditional system of medicines around the world. At present, India stands at first rank in production and at second rank in the export of pomegranate. It is one of the oldest plants and the fruit has been considered very useful for human health. Almost all the parts of the plant have been found to have number of bioactive metabolites. The name of the plant comes from two Latin words Pomum and Granatus. Pomum means apple and Granatus means grainy or seeds or seeded apple. In ancient Egypt, the fruit was called as ARHUMANI. The Romans named it as Malum punicum and then as Punica granatum. It originated from central Asia. It is widely distributed in different geographical areas like Iran, India, China, California, and other Asian countries. The chemical constituents of the plants vary as per the region, cultivation time and climate of that area. Ellagic acid, gallic acid, tannins and flavonoids are the main constituents of plant and are very useful in various diseases. Pomegranate is having various activities like antibacterial, antifungal, anthelmintic, antidiarrheal, antispasmodic, Antiinflammatory, and antioxidant activities. It helps to increase the level of red blood cells in human beings.
