ABSTRACT:
In Ayurveda, Kwath Churna signifies as herbal powder used for making kvatha or decoction. The word “Churna” means powder whereas “Kwath” means its decoction. These powders are prepared by grinding specific medicinal herbs or blends of herbs which are later boiled in water for their chemical extraction for use in medicine and pharmacology. As stated in Sharangdhar Samhita, the traditional Ayurvedic pharmacology, Phalatrikadi Kwath is claimed to be beneficial in metabolic disorder such as diabetes by reducing the high level of blood glucose. The current study focuses on formulations of Phalatrikadi Kwath, which has the potential to be utilized as an anti-diabetic medication. We have also analysed all physicochemical standards such as extractive values, “total ash”, and “loss on drying, acid insoluble ash”, HPTLC and heavy metal test. The result demonstrated that the quality of the churna was comparable to the Ayurvedic Pharmacopeia of India (API). The physicochemical analysis showed that “the percentage of water soluble extractive” value is maximum as compared to “alcohol soluble and hydro alcohol soluble extractive” indicating the presence of large amount of water soluble phytoconstituents. The Moisture content (loss on drying) was found to be between 6.5% to 8.5%w/w. The presence of “heavy metals -Mercury, Lead, and Arsenic” were found to be in below detection limit. Hence these results ensure its safety as ayurvedic formulation. The presence of bioactive and corroborated by prior research suggested that it has anti-diabetic efficacy and further research can be done to analyse the efficacy of the formulation.
