ABSTRACT:
The purpose of the study was to examine the antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity of aqueous extract of Anisomeles malabarica leaves. Antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH, Nitric oxide, and superoxide scavenging assays and in vitro anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using Protein denaturation assay i.e. egg albumin and bovine serum albumin. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of an aqueous extract of A. malabarica leaves were evaluated in vitro. Preliminary phytochemical screening indicated the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, tannins, quinones, polysaccharides, saponins and absence of anthroquinones. The IC50 values for each assay were calculated using standard graphs. Remarkable free radicals scavenging ability with concentration dependent inhibition was observed in all the tested radicals with IC50 namely, DPPH (49.68 µg/ml), nitric oxide (NO) (61.11µg/ml) and superoxide (44.39 µg/ml). The inhibition rate of egg albumin and bovine serum albumin protein denaturation increased gradually with increasing concentrations from 100-500 µg/ml. Anti-inflammatory assay recorded IC50 of egg albumin (372.40 µg/ml), bovine serum albumin (355.86 µg/ml). The results suggest the potential use of Anisomeles malabarica as an excellent antioxidant with strong anti-inflammatory impact discovery builds the enough scientific frameworks in future to isolate and purify the bioactive components for further uses.
