ABSTRACT:
Spilanthes calva D.C. (Family: Asteraceae) has been reported in traditional medicines in the treatment of inflammation, rheumatism, toothache, paralysis of the tongue, skin diseases and dysentery etc. In the present study, the leaves of Spilanthes calva D.C. were extracted with three different solvents and screened for their analgesic and CNS depressant activities in mice. The analgesic activity was carried out by acetic acid-induced writhing method and CNS depressant activity was evaluated by using two standard neuropharmacological experimental methods viz. phenobarbital-induced sleeping time and locomotor activity. Methanolic extracts exhibited potent analgesic as well as CNS depressant activities at the tested dose level, whereas, ethyl acetate and pet-ether extracts were found to be less potent when compared to the standard drugs.
