ABSTRACT:
Mucoadhesive controlled release tablet can improve the effectiveness of a drug by maintaining the drug concentration between the effective and toxic levels, and allowing targeting and localization of a drug at a specific site. Mucoadhesive oral tablets were formulated by using model drug as Captopril and mucoadhesive polymers such as Carbopol 974P and Hydroxy propyl methylcellulose (HPMC K4 M and HPMC K15 M). The polymers were used in different concentrations to provided sustained release of drug over a period of 12 hr. along with mucoadhesion. Drug release from these tablets was diffusion controlled and followed non-Fickian release. Tablets also exhibited good swelling and mucoadhesive strength.
