ABSTRACT:
Hyperlipidaemia is a major risk factor for development of coronary artery disease. Macrotyloma uniflorum (M. uniflorum) is traditionally used in India for medicinal purposes In this study, effect of ethanolic extract of M. uniflorum seeds was investigated in Triton X-100 induced hyperlipidaemic rats. Hyperlipidaemia was induced in Wistar rats by intraperitoneal (i.p) injections of Triton at a dose of 400mg/kg body weight. Treatment with the ethanolic extract of M. uniflorum orally at a dose of 200mg/kg body weight significantly reduced the cholesterol, phospholipids, triglycerides, total lipid, low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and significantly increased the high density lipoprotein (HDL) level associated with reduction of atherogenic index in hperlipidaemic rats. However, the results suggest that M. uniflorum has a beneficial effect in treating hyperlipidemia and may serve as a potential drug for prevention of hyperlipidaemic atherosclerosis.
