ABSTRACT:
Drug development technologies constituting innovations at the formulation end in the pharmaceutical industry have received a lot of attention in past two decades. Drug delivery as an opportunity to extend product life cycles has indeed proved its place in the market with significant advantages of therapeutic gains as well as commercial success. There are various departments of medicine like cancer, pulmonary, cardiology, radiology, gynaecology, and oncology etc, numerous drugs are used and they are delivered by various types of drug delivery system. Among them microsphere drug delivery system has gained enormous attention due to its wide range of application as it covers targeting the drug to particular site to imaging and helping the diagnostic features. Microspheres are characteristically free flowing powders consisting of proteins or synthetic polymers which are biodegradable in nature and ideally having a particle size less than 200 micrometer. Microspheres received much attention not only for prolonged release, but also for targeting of anticancer drugs to the tumours. The purpose of the review is to compile various advances in drug delivery, types of microspheres, different methods to preparation, its applications, and also various parameters to evaluate their efficiency.
