ABSTRACT:
The oil palm tree contains approximately 30 healthy and active leafs. The biochemical parameters vary from leaf to leaf in the palm tree due to difference in growth stage. It is important to investigate different parameters in all the leaves of a palm. Based on this idea, the biochemical analysis for parameters like protein pattern and Isozyme pattern and peroxidase enzyme activity of all the 32 leaves (unopened-leaf to leaf no. 31) in pisifera variety of oil palm was carried out. This information would be used mainly for selecting an index leaf for specific parameter to be analyzed. From the electrophoresis it was observed that all the 32 leafs differ from leaf to leaf in protein pattern, Isozyme pattern and also the enzyme activity. From the study it is suggested that the 9th leaf can be sampled for SDS-PAGE blueprint of soluble protein due to more number of bands with higher intensity. Any younger leaves from 9th to 19th can be used as index leaf for peroxidase isozyme analysis and immature leafs i.e. unopened and 1st leaf can be used as index leaf for study of Esterase Isozyme.
