ABSTRACT:
Allium kurrat and Eruca sativa extracts exerted antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against Escherichia coli O157:H7. Both extracts could inhibit planktonic growth at 2.5 mg/ml. The biofilm inhibition was investigated at different sub-inhibitory concentrations. Allium kurrat extract showed a statistically significant higher biofilm inhibiting activity than that of Eruca sativa extract. The percentage of biofilm inhibition of Allium kurrat extract ranged between 65.42±0.18 and 50.65±0.09 at 1/2MIC and 1/16 MIC, respectively. At 1/2MIC, the percentage of biofilm inhibition of Eruca sativa extract was 59.37±0.29, while at 1/16 MIC Eruca sativa extract inhibited biofilm formation by 40.17±0.05. Allium kurrat extract showed higher biofilm eradicating activity than Eruca sativa extract. E. coli O157:H7 biofilm was eliminated by Allium kurrat extract at 1/8MIC, while similar activity was observed at MIC of Eruca sativa extract. These results suggest the use of Allium kurrat and Eruca sativa extracts to control Escherichia coli O157:H7 biofilm.
