ABSTRACT:
Ocular route of drug delivery is one of the most challenging arena faced by the pharmaceutical scientist, it is because of the complex anatomy, physiology of eye which makes the delivery of drug so complex. The challenge to the formulator is to circumvent the protective barriers of the eye without causing permanent tissue damage. Novel delivery systems have been developed for extended duration and controlled release strategy. Some of the newer, sensitive and successful ocular delivery system like inserts, biodegradable polymeric system, collagen shields, nanoparticles, phase transition systems, niosomes, liposomes, and pharmacosomes are being developed in order to attain better ocular bioavailability and sustained action of ocular drugs.
