ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Capparis spinosa L. (common name: kabbar ) is one of the most common medicinal plants which used in traditional medicine in many countries belong the family Capparidaceae, C. spinosa as known as medicinal herbs, contained many phytochemical groups of secondary metabolite products which effect in therapy including, triterpenoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, phenolics, flavonoids, steroids, carbohydrates, glycosides and minerals. Objective: The purpose of this study was determine of Pharmacognostical and phytochemical compounds in the leaves of Capparis spinosa L. which grown in Iraqi environment. The Pharmacognostical study was included macroscopical and microscopical examination while the phytochemical study was included screening of active ingredients and then isolation and identification of terpene by GC/MS. Method and material: The part used (leaves ) of plant C. spinosa L. were collected from medicinal plants garden of college of pharmacy of Mustansiriyah University in Baghdad .The Pharmacognostical evaluation of the plant did by Macroscopic and Microscopic examination, fresh and dried leaves of C. spinosa were used to study Pharmacognostical evaluation, standard methods of phytochemical screening used to investigation the active components and isolation the terpene and analyzed it by GC/MS. Result and Conclusion: The Gas chromatography and Mass spectrometry analysis of hexane extract of C. spinosa leaves ( terpenes) got to identification of four compounds, Tricosane, Eicosane, Tetracosane, Cholesta-8,24-dien-3-ol, 4-methyl-, (3.beta, 4.alpha.). This analysis was referred to that the major contains of terpene. The research referred to the extract of hexane of C. spinosa leaves as a rich source of terpenes.
