ABSTRACT:
The release analysis in a simulated gastric fluid (SGF) medium aims to determine the dissolution of red ginger oleoresin microcapsules under acidic conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine the amount of red ginger oleoresin released in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) medium and determine release kinetics. The red ginger oleoresin microcapsules were prepared by emulsion crosslinking method, the stage of this method was the formation of emulsion between chitosan and oleoresin, and then the emulsion was inserted in corn oil to form a second emulsion. The next stage was the addition of glutaraldehyde saturated toluene (GST), followed by the addition of 25% glutaraldehyde solution. Microcapsules were washed, filtered and then dried. Test release of red ginger oleoresin microcapsules in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) medium at pH 1.2. Samples were analyzed using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer to determine their absorbance. The highest cumulative percentage release was 39.5% obtained from microcapsules with 1% chitosan concentration and 10 mL GST, while the smallest cumulative percentage release was obtained from 4% chitosan concentration and 20 mL GST ie 28.5%. The Higuchi model was the most appropriate model to describe the release kinetics of microcapsules because it had the highest correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.98. This Higuchi model shows that red ginger oleoresin releases through diffusion.
