ABSTRACT:
Objective: The present study envisaged assessment of antidiabetic potential of crude hydro-ethanolic extract of Caesalpinia bonducella (family: Febaceae/Caesalpiniaceae) plant from Chambal region on standard pharmacological models. Experimental: The hydro-ethanolic extract of C. bonducella, obtained by hot continuous extraction, was subjected to phytochemical examination and standard pharmacological screening for hypoglycemic effect. The crude plant extract was evaluated for hypoglycemic activity in 18 hrs rat fasted model, oral glucose tolerance test model and in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rat model at a dose levels of 250 and 500 mg/kg. Blood glucose levels were measured on 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of the study. Results: The Oral administration of hydro-ethanolic extracts of C. bonducella, APAE001 and APAE002, observed significantly (P<0.0001) producing hypoglycemia in STZ induced diabetic rats. Conclusion: Hydro-ethanolic extract of C. bonducella showed potential hypoglycemic property, which compliment the traditional claim of its use in treatment of diabetics by rural dwellers in Chambal Valley. The phyto-constituents viz phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins and triterpenoids which on standard pharmacological models have anti-diabetic property may be responsible to bring about hypoglycemia. Further research is warranted to isolate and identify the bioactive constituents responsible for this activity.
