ABSTRACT:
Thymol and Carvacrol are the main compounds of Thymus vulgaris essential oil which have the potential as antioxidants and antimicrobials. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of gingival mucoadhesive patch made from T. vulgaris essential oil to inhibit the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans and F. nucleatum bacteria. This research is an experimental laboratory type research with a post-test control group only design. The sampels are divided into 8 groups; they were A. actinomycetemcomitans bacterial groups with T. vulgaris essential oil, A. actinomycetemcomitans with mucoadhesive gingival patches, A. actinomycetemcomitans with gingival patches from T. vulgaris essential oil, A. actinomycetemcomitans with doxycycline mucoadhesive gingival patches, F. nucleatum with T. vulgaris essential oil, F. nucleatum with mucoadhesive gingival patch, F. nucleatum with mucoadhesive gingival patch from T. vulgaris essential oil, and F. nucleatum with doxycycline gingival patch. The next step was to incubate those bacteria groups for 24 hours at 370C and then to do a calculation of the diameter of the inhibition zone using calipers. The data was analyzed using the normality test by Kolmogrov-Smirnov and followed by the Levene’s homogeneity test (p>0.05). One-way ANOVA and continued with Tukey HSD (p<0.05) was done. Result: In A. actinomycetemcomitans and F. nucleatum there was a significant difference between groups of T. vulgaris essential oil and mucoadhesive gingival patch from T. vulgaris essential oil with the doxycycline mucoadhesive gingival patch. Conclusion: Mucoadhesive gingival patch of T. vulgaris essential oil can inhibit the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans and F. nucleatum.
