ABSTRACT:
Denture stomatitis is a form of oral candidiasis and is a very common inflammatory process on palatal and gingival mucosa which is in direct contact with the denture base. Punica granatum (Pomegranate) is the plant with medicinal and nutritional benefit for which it is used in medicine for treating various diseases. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of Punica granatum peel extract clinically and mycologically in patients with denture stomatitis and to compare clinically and mycologically, the effectiveness of Punica granatum with that of Miconazole. Methodology: After obtaining informed consent a total of 50 patients diagnosed with denture stomatitis were selected. Each group consisted of 25 patients, and they were split into two at random. Group A received Punica granatum gel and Group B received Miconazole Daktarin® gel oral. Results: The results revealed significant difference in the erythematous area, number of petechiae and colony forming units within the study and control groups. Conclusion: Punica granatum can be used as an alternative topical antifungal agent.
