ABSTRACT:
This study aims to find out the alpha-amylase inhibitory activity of polyherbal asava. The alpha-amylase enzyme is the key source for postprandial hyperglycaemia, responsible for Type 2 Diabetes. Asava is the fermented formulation of the traditional Indian medicinal system. It is the best ayurvedic formulation which is self-generated alcohol and because of this preparation is potentiated. This study investigated the process of preparing fermented medicines as asava prescribed in Ayurveda. This preparation involves ginger, fenugreek, amla dry powder, and jaggery. Woodfordia fructicosa flower which acts as a fermentation initiator used in this formulation. This preparation has moderate anti-diabetic activity. The evidence shows that polyherbal asava (a natural polyherbal fermented product) has moderate alpha-amylase inhibitory activity. The results of polyherbal asava are satisfactory and moderately significant in comparison to standard Acarbose. Therefore, polyherbal asava a polyherbal decoction, might be a future potent Ayurvedic formulation for diabetic patients.
