ABSTRACT:
The development of drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis (TB) has made the hunt for new, safe, and effective anti-TB medications necessary. TB remains a major global health concern. This study explores the phytochemical composition and anti-mycobacterial potential of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Bauhinia racemosa Lam. leaves. Both extracts were analyzed for phytochemical constituents, revealing the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, glycosides, carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, and tannins. The anti-TB activity of these extracts was evaluated against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, demonstrating significant inhibitory potential, with the ethanolic extract showing greater potency. Chromatographic and spectroscopic analyses led to the isolation and identification of quercetin, a flavonoid known for its antimicrobial and pharmacological properties. Further molecular docking studies confirmed quercetin’s strong binding affinity with the M. tuberculosis receptor (1TQ8), supporting its role as a potential natural anti-TB agent. These findings highlight Bauhinia racemosa Lam. as a promising source for anti-TB drug development, warranting further in vitro and in vivo investigations to validate its therapeutic potential. Results showed that aqueous and ethanolic extracts showed potential antituberculosis activity against mycobacterium tuberculosis and were confirmed by docking study.
