ABSTRACT:
Malva sylvestris L., commonly known as mallow, is widely distributed around temperate and tropical regions in both hemispheres of the planet. This plant belongs to the Malvaceae family and has a remarkable amount of flavonoid content, which is linked with various beneficial pharmacological effects. This study aims to explore an innovative approach to optimize the extraction of flavonoids from Malva sylvestris L. by implementing an enzyme-assisted method, utilizing cellulase as an enzyme. Cellulase, as an enzyme of hydrolyses class, plays a crucial role in hydrolyzing polysaccharides in the cell membrane. The enzymatic activity effectively disrupts the cell membranes, realizes valuable phytocompounds into extraction solvent, thus enhancing the yield of flavonoids. The extraction efficiency was influenced by three critical variables: temperature of extraction, which ranges from 50 – 60?, the pH of the solvent set between 3.5 and 4.5, the time of the process, which spans from 30 to 90minutes. The Box-Behnken design was used as the response surface method. The results revealed that the optimal conditions for extraction of flavonoid from M. sylvestris were found to be a temperature of 56.88 ?, a pH of 3.93, and an extraction time of 58.11min. Under this condition, the total flavonoid content was determined to be 4.514mg QE/g DW.
