ABSTRACT:
Background: Chemotherapy remains central in cancer management, yet its success is often hampered by toxic side effects and diminished quality of life. Vitamin D, recognized for its immunological, anti-inflammatory, and potential tumor-suppressing actions, has been suggested as a beneficial adjunct. Objective: To investigate whether vitamin D given alongside chemotherapy improves clinical outcomes and patient-reported quality of life compared with chemotherapy alone. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted over two months in a tertiary hospital including 20 carcinoma patients. Participants were grouped into chemotherapy with vitamin D supplementation (C+V, n=10) or chemotherapy only (C, n=10). Serum vitamin D, symptom burden, and quality of life (via EORTC QLQ-C30) were evaluated at baseline, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks. Analyses employed chi-square, t-tests, and multivariate regression with significance set at p<0.05. Results: The supplementation group exhibited significantly elevated vitamin D levels (p<0.001). Improvements were observed in functional domains such as physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being (p=0.04). Scores for fatigue, nausea/vomiting, and pain were notably reduced (p<0.05). Toxicity-related symptoms were also attenuated. Conclusion: Combining vitamin D with chemotherapy enhanced tolerance, alleviated side effects, and improved patient quality of life. Broader studies are recommended to validate these outcomes.
