ABSTRACT:
Gastric ulcers continue to be a global health problem and are commonly treated with agents such as Omeprazole, which can lead to side effects upon long-term administration. To formulate and assess a polyherbal suspension in equal ratio of Annona squamosa, Glycyrrhiza glabra and Zingiber officinale for its gastro protective activity against ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in wistar rats along with antioxidant potential. Suspension with viscosity of 118.62 cp, a pH of 7.49 (almost neutral), and sedimentation volume of only 0.34 showed proper physical stability as well as redispersability. In the ethanol-induced ulcer model, the ulcer control group presented with a high ulcer index (11.945±0.155). Polyherbal formulation (45mg/ml) also significantly reduced the ulcer index to 4.786±0.782 (p<0.05). In addition, the formulation reduced gastric juice volume substantially (2.852±0.721mL) and increased gastric pH indicating potent anti-secretory activity like that of standard drug Omeprazole. These findings suggested that the synergistic effect of these medicinal plants provides a viable natural therapeutic approach to ameliorate oxidative stress and gastric inflammation.
