ABSTRACT:
Background: As much as 93.3% of oral lesions are trauma-induced, commonly known as oral traumatic ulcers. Chronic recurrent traumatic ulcers have the potential to contribute to the development of oral cancer, particularly oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The healing of oral traumatic ulcers can be achieved pharmacologically, such as with topical corticosteroid therapy. Long- term use of corticosteroids can lead to osteoporosis, gastrointestinal irritation, and a tendency for bleeding. An alternative pharmaceutical preparation currently being developed by researchers is the microneedle patch. Previous studies have also reported that the petai peel showed biological properties that promote lesion healing. Objective: Analyzing physical morphology and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) tests on microneedle patch of petai (Parkia speciosa Hassk., Fabaceae) peel extract as a candidate for oral traumatic ulcer therapy. Material and Methods: The study commenced with the extraction of petai peel, followed by grouping into negative control (K-), positive control (K+), and three treatment groups (P1, P2, and P3). Negative molds for microneedle patch were synthesized, and the microneedle patch were subsequently created. The resulting microneedle patch was subjected to physical morphology and FTIR testing, and the obtained data were analyzed. Results: The physical morphology testing revealed that the needle length of the petai peel extract microneedle patch was 703.898 µm. FTIR testing revealed the presence of functional groups such as O-H, C=O, and C=C, which are commonly associated with phenolic- and flavonoid-like structures. Conclusion: Analysis of physical morphology and Fourier Transform Infra Red testing showed that petai peel extract microneedle patch has the potential as a candidate therapeutic approach for oral traumatic ulcers.
