ABSTRACT:
A series of nitrogen and sulphur donor Schiff base ligands derived from salicylaldehyde and thiosemicarbazone were synthesized and characterized. Their transition metal complexes with Cu (II), Ni (II), Co (II), and Zn (II) ions were prepared under reflux conditions and studied using elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, FT-IR, UV-Visible spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction data reported in recent literature. The synthesized ligands behaved as bidentate N, S donor systems coordinating through azomethine nitrogen and thiocarbonyl sulphur atoms. Physico-chemical investigations revealed octahedral geometries for Co (II) and Ni (II) complexes, distorted octahedral geometry for Cu (II), and tetrahedral geometry for Zn (II). Antimicrobial screening demonstrated enhanced biological activity of metal complexes compared with free ligands due to chelation effects. The study confirms that mixed donor ligands provide stable coordination frameworks with promising catalytic and biological applications.
