ABSTRACT:
Menopause is defined as the end of a woman’s reproduction stage and amenorrhoea is due to cessation of ovarian follicular activity and ovarian follicle produces the two most significant hormone i.e., estrogen and progesterone. This research aims to comprehensively examine the variation in diverse range of symptoms and their impact on general health, well being and QOL across transitional stages of menopause among women. Cross sectional, observational study was conducted in various region of North Gujarat. 390 menopausal women having aged 40-60 years who provided informed consent were enrolled in the study as per the inclusion criteria. Pregnant, lactating women and not willing to participate in the study were excluded from the study. Data was collected, coded, entered in Microsoft Excel and analyzed using the IBM SPSS version 2.0. Out of total 500 women screened, 405 women were enrolled in the study. Out of 169 pre menopausal women, 144(85%) women have less than 50 years of age and 25 (15%) women having more than 50 years of age. Out of 91 post menopausal women, 53 having (58.2%) below 50 years of age and 38 having (41.8%) above 50 years of age. 145 post menopausal women, 13(9%) having below 50 years and 132(91%) having more than 50 years of age. The data revealed that 122(72.1%) from pre menopause, 63(69.2%) from peri menopause,, 64(44.1%) from post menopause were aware about menopause, but in pre menopause and post menopausal stage, 50(29.6%), 78 (53.8%) respectively, respondents don’t know about the cause of menopause. Mean and SD of menopausal symptoms were assessed by Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) in three different stages of menopause. Hot flushes, sleep problems, anxiety, Joint and Muscular pain was found to be statistical significance. Significant differences was found in sexual problems (p<0.05), suggesting decline in sexual function. Bladder complaints & Joint pain, Both highly significant (p<0.01 to <0.001), reflecting stronger physical impact in post-menopause. Depressive moods, heart discomfort, vaginal dryness showed no significant variation across groups, though mean values increase slightly. According to this study transition gap between different stages of menopause are too short and hamper day to day activity. Impaired quality of life was due to poor knowledge, lack of awareness and knowledge regarding menopause.
